JOIN US: “Hymn Night” w/ Page CXVI

April 18th, 2012 • by Chris • in Events No Comments

O.C. friends,

I hope to see you at this tomorrow night!

From The Gospel for OC website:

Make it a date night. Make it a family night. You can even make it a small group activity. Whichever you choose, you can be certain of one thing: this will be a worship night.

Page CXVI (a side project of The Autumn Film) is a talented and gifted band from Colorado. They arrange old hymns to new tunes—and they do it well. If you were at their show in Irvine last year, you know what we’re talking about. It was a phenomenal worship experience.

This is why we are excited to announce that Page CXVI will be returning to Orange County on Thursday, April 19.

Join us at Reverence Bible Church for a worshipful night of hymns and song. It starts at 7pm. The price of admission is $10 ($5 for kids). All proceeds go to the band.

See you there!

We must feed on Christ crucified

April 6th, 2012 • by Chris • in Quotable No Comments

"...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."
(Romans 3:23-26)

Let us never doubt for a moment, that the preaching of Christ crucified – the old story of His blood, righteousness, and substitution – is enough for all the spiritual necessities of all mankind. It is not worn out. It is not obsolete. It has not lost its power. We need nothing new – nothing more broad and kind – nothing more intellectual – nothing more effectual.

We need nothing but the true bread of life, distributed faithfully among starving souls. Let men sneer or ridicule as they will. Nothing else can do good in this sinful world. No other teaching can fill hungry consciences, and give them peace. We are all in a wilderness. We must feed on Christ crucified, and the atonement made by His death, or we shall die in our sins.

—J.C. Ryle (from Expository Thoughts on the Gospels: John)

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Today is the day!

Amazon and Goodreads official

When my friends and I found out that my first book The Two Fears: Tremble Before God Alone was set to release on April Fool's Day, it became a running joke that my publisher, Cruciform Press, would wait until today to tell me that the whole thing was a grand practical joke all along.

Well, with gratitude and a sigh of relief, I'm happy to announce that the book has officially launched today! In fact, it is even Amazon and Goodreads official (you can purchase the hard copy on Amazon for $9.99).

Here is today's official announcement from the Cruciform Press Facebook page:

Endorsed by RUSSELL MOORE, PETER JONES & more. Order a copy for as little as $3.99 with a subscription at http://Bit.ly/2FEARS Note: If you fancy short, concise, practical, and gospel-centered books, then a Cruciform Press subscription is the way to go!

“I don’t know about you, but most of the things I grapple with in ministry, and in my own life, are summed up in two issues. We are too scared. And we aren’t scared enough. This book by Chris Poblete points the way to crucify our fear of man and to rightly order our fear of God. Reading this book will prompt you to seek in your own life the biblical tension between ‘fear not’ and ‘fear God.'”

—Russell D. Moore, Dean, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“In this practical and very readable book, Chris Poblete describes a side of our culture—the absence of fear. ‘Where have the God-fearers gone?’ he asks. He shows how both the absence of true fear and the presence of ‘unholy [false] fear’ stem from an absence of a knowledge of the awesome God of the Bible, and that, in meeting him, we discover the real dimensions of creational existence and the wonderful benefits of living in fear and deep respect before Him, freed from the ‘[false] fear of men.’”

—Peter Jones, PhD, Executive Director, TruthXchange; Scholar-in-Residence and Adjunct Professor, Westminster Seminary in California

“Our lives can be guided by what we fear and Chris Poblete wants us to fear the Lord! He unpacks for us, through the lens of God’s revealed character and the gospel, that fearing the Lord is not some cheap cliché, but a blood-bought gift for His people that leads to repentance, thankfulness, adoration and worship."

Thanks to everyone for your love, support, and prayers. Let's continue to pray expectantly that our God and King would use The Two Fears: Tremble Before God Alone to bring much glory to himself!

"For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen" (Romans 11:36).

Three Days and Counting Down...

My first book comes out in three days. Craziness.

'Tis a time of thanksgiving, reflection, and continued prayers. I'm often asked how I got a book published. Let's face it - I didn't. God did. Seriously. From beginning to end, this entire process has been a grand testimony of God's grace in my life. Who knew that the kid who almost flunked out of English class his senior year in high school would one day be a journalism major, career writer, and eventual published author? Not I. But such is the business of our God. He has a good hankering for using foolish ones like me; after all, we serve well as public displays of his grace (1 Corinthians 1:26-29).

The Two Fears: Tremble Before God Alone comes out in a few days. With the book's release around the corner, I thought I'd share four things I learned during this whole process followed by four ways you can pray. Read More →

Starting tonight and going through Friday, I'll be down in Escondido to attend the TruthXchange 2012 Think Tank. I'll be live-blogging  the event for TruthXchange, so be sure to follow along over at their website.

This will be a great week. I cannot wait to seep in some good gospel truth and reconnect with loved friends.

Mary Eady sums up the theme of this Think Tank:

When we bow our heads to pray, we do not send out thoughts into a shapeless universe of chance.  Rather, we converse with a God who knows us by name, loves us to death and beyond, and has a plan and purpose for everything under heaven.  When we read scripture, we do not read the rambling, disconnected stories of many men conspiring across the ages to make a few wise points.  We are reading the Word of God, inspired and protected through the ages by His sovereignty so that we might have a “light for our feet” and a “lamp for our path.”  When we consider the awe-inspiring breadth of a sunset over the Pacific, or the graceful expanse of a valley beneath our feet when we stand on a mountain top, the ache we feel is not because we’re overwhelmed by passing, finite beauty.  Our hearts ache because something inside us is designed to know that everything we survey in creation is telling us that there is something more. There is Someone behind it all.

The conference is called "The Beauty of Two" because it recognizes the other-ness (or God-ness) of God. Instead of worshiping the created order, we ought to worship the transcendent Creator (Romans 1). This is what Peter Jones calls Two-ism, and it is what the conference will focus on. If you want more information on One-ism vs. Two-ism, check out Aaron Sellars' review of One or Two: Seeing a World of Difference.

The Church Is God’s New Community

January 19th, 2012 • by Chris • in Quotable No Comments

NOTE: I apologize for the lack of posts lately. We were having issues connecting with the web server. All is good now, and I'm back in the blog saddle. Stay tuned...

"The church lies at the very center of the eternal purpose of God. It is not a divine afterthought. It is not an accident of history. On the contrary, the church is God's new community. For His purpose, conceived in a past eternity, being worked out in history, and to be perfected in a future eternity, is not just to save isolated individuals and so perpetuate our loneliness but rather to build His church, that is, to call out of the world a people for His own glory."

Here are the albums that earned a permanent spot on my Christmas 2011 playlist:

How about you? What albums would you add to this list?

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

December 12th, 2011 • by Chris • in Tunes 3 Comments

True story. It really is cold outside today in Orange County—a rainy 52°F (don't laugh, friends in northern states).

Anyhow, a couple of my favorite new artists, The Royal Sons and Mariah McManus, join musical forces in this rad rendition of Baby, It's Cold Outside:

Happy Birthday, Alyssa Graham

December 6th, 2011 • by Chris • in Personal 13 Comments

Today, my fiancée, Alyssa Graham (soon-to-be Poblete, woohoo!), turns 24. She is the most obvious example of God's grace in my life. Anyone who knows us will vouch for that.

In honor of this big day, I felt compelled to offer 24 reasons I'm head over heels in love with her. Here they are:

  1. She loves Jesus. Don't believe me? Read these.
  2. She loves me. Don't believe me? Yeah, I wouldn't either. But it's true. In fact, she tells me time and time again, and it blows my mind every time I hear it.
  3. She's gracious. She knows my flaws and failings—the many areas I clearly fall short—and yet, she still loves me. It's grace through and through.
  4. She loves the Church (big 'c').
  5. She loves the church (little 'c'). Several months before Alyssa and I started dating/courting/dourting, she was a bona fide church-hopper. In the last couple years, she has grown in her love and appreciation for the local church—a complete 180. Luhh that.
  6. She loves her family immensely.
  7. She loves my family, and my family loves her.
  8. My sister loves her and is one of her best friends. In fact, Alyssa was the maid of honor in Cami's wedding, and Cami will be matron of honor in ours. Since my sister and I are close, I am absolutely thrilled by this.
  9. She does not waste her friendships. She prays over her friends daily and seeks intentional discipleship with them. Where her ladies at?!  - they'll tell you.
  10. Alyssa is a servant. She is servant-hearted to the bone, putting others' needs before her own. Just ask our friends, her family, our church. She often serves behind the scenes, an unsung hero in many different ways.
  11. She doesn't seek attention for herself, but wants her life, and our marriage, to be the sweet aroma of Christ to the world around us.
  12. She is a God-fearing woman in all the right kinds of ways.
  13. She is stunningly beautiful from the inside out, donning the imperishable beauty of a gentle spirit.
  14. She is trustworthy and a woman of character.
  15. With each new day, she hates sin more and more and loves the gospel all the more because of it.
  16. She doesn't make excuses, and when she discerns her own sins against me, she is quick to ask for forgiveness.
  17. She is even quicker to forgive me of mine, even when I make excuses.
  18. She is more concerned about our holiness than she is about our happiness. She desires long-withstanding faithfulness more than momentary pleasures.
  19. She is a hard worker, living with resolve and a don't-waste-your-life mentality. And when she knows her week's schedule is going to be over-the-top insane (which is every week for the last few months), she rests in the strength of the Lord and labors with joy.
  20. She is a student of the Word and fights diligently for quality time with the Lord—to sit in, meditate upon, wrestle with, and feed on the truths of Scripture.
  21. She is a champion and contender for complementarian relationships.
  22. She wants to adopt one day. We believe that Scripture calls the Church to care for orphans in need. Together, we've called dibs on that and look forward to adopting a child into our family one day.
  23. She loves to pray. We pray together each night—over the phone or in person—and I love the way she prays. She is a woman of great faith.
  24. She is a wonderful helper and encourager, always asking how she can better serve, support, and pray for me. God faithfully works through her to sharpen me, and I'm a better man because of it.

I'm starting to wish she were older so I could write even more about this amazing woman in my life. The list could surely go on and on, so let's do this...

What about you? Do you know Alyssa? If you do, tell me what you appreciate about this lovely fiancée of mine. Leave it in the comments below.

And to Alyssa - here's looking at you, love. Happy Birthday! I love you and cannot wait to marry you. I'm thanking my God for you today. I am truly blessed.
